GLUE-ON / TAPE-ON

A glue-on transmitter attaches to feathers or skin of the scapular region of a bird's back with glue or epoxy. Quick setting epoxies: cyanoacrylates (Superglue), skin glues, and eyelash adhesives are examples of some of the products used in past studies for attachment. Fabric or gauze is often used to increase the surface area for the glue/skin/feather interface. Double-sided tape has been used successfully to attach transmitters to the backs of penguins. Adhesive designs are most often used on small passerines and penguins. Transmitter retention time is highly variable depending on fastening methods and molting pattern of the bird. Field range is comparable to other attachment methods with external whip antennas.
